Medicare supplement plans help cover the gaps that "Original Medicare" do not cover. This is why medicare supplement plans are also called medigap plans. Medicare supplements are provided by private insurance companies not affiliated with Medicare. However, the plans offered must follow the Medicare guidelines.
There are 11 standardized plans A, B, C, D, F, HDF, G, K, L, M, and N. Since the plans are standardized a Plan A from one company is the same as a Plan A from another company. The only difference will be the cost of a plan from company to company. The chart below shows what each plan covers as it relates to the gap in coverage with "Original Medicare".
Plan F is the most comprehensive plan. This plan covers 100% of everything Medicare does not. Other good optons are Plan G which covers everthing except the Part B deductible and the High Deductibe F plan or HDF. With the HDF plan, Medicare continues to pays its normal amount and you then have a deductible for the HDF plan. For 2017, the deductible is $2200 as shown in the chart above. Once you reach this deductible each year, the plan then pays 100% just like the regular Plan F.
