Medicare Advantage plans have been around since the 1970s as a demonstration program and then under the name Medicare Choice. In 2003, as part of the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act the name Medicare Advantage was introduced. Medicare Advantage plans have been gaining popularity the last few years. They are typically a health maintenance organization (HMO), but there are some that are Preferred Provider Organization (PPO).
Medicare Advantage plans are provided as an alternative to "Original Medicare", which includes Part A and Part B. Due to this, they are required to have the same or better benefits as those provided under "Original Medicare". Typically, these plans provide better benefits than "Original Medicare" and may provide additional benefits like dental or vision. A Medicare Advantage plan also limits your "out-of-pocket" expenses. Under "Original Medicare" there is not a limit on your "out-of-pocket" expenses.
Medicare Advantage plans service a particular area. You must live in the service area to purchase a particular plan. Plans vary widely in their benefits, premiums and deductibles and copays from company to company. Some plans may also include prescription drug coverage. Some companies include special need plans for individuals with diabetes, chronic heart failure, or other conditions. These type of plans offer additional benefits specific to these type of conditions.
There are even plans that cover individuals who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid. These plans no only offer benefits not offered by Medicaid alone, but may allow you to get seen by doctors or hospitals not typically available to Medicaid recipients. If you are dual eligible, these plan do not typically require any additional premium.
